This morning as Ems and I were walking into her school, we said "Hi" to the Director (also named Emma), as we do every morning, and began our treck down the hallway to her class. As we rounded the corner Emma looked at me and asked "Does Miss Emma have a baby in her belly?"
"I think she does!", I answered.
We walked two more steps, "I don't like that".
[Inner Stephanie] ------
[Inner Stephanie] Shit! Alrighty, looks like I'm going to be late for work.
"Why don't you like that honey?", but my question was met with silence. We kept walking.
[Inner Stephanie] WHY? would she be so upset about Miss Emma being pregnant? She's never acted this way before.
[Inner Stephanie] Shit!
We walked into her classroom and hung her coat and backpack and walked silently to the cafeteria still in silence. Looking down at her it was clear she was deep in thought.
"Bug, are you hungry? You haven't eaten anything yet."
She shook her head slowly and looked up at me where I saw great big, HUGE, alligator tears in her eyes.
I immediately dropped to my knee and began hugging her. Something was wrong!
[Inner Stephanie] MY BABY!
"Tell me what's bothering you baby?"
"I don't want a baby in my belly!!"
[Inner Stephanie] Oh Sweet Jesus!
[Inner Stephanie] Ha!
"Honey you don't have a baby in your belly, Miss Emma the TEACHER has a baby in her belly - not you!"
"OH! [laughter] [hugs] Mama, I'm hungry"
[Inner Stephanie] HOLY SHIT!
